For centuries Tibetans have placed prayer flags around their homes, at sacred sites, near monasteries, and on mountain passes, as an offering to the enlightened ones and as prayer for the benefit of all beings. As these prayers are carried into the wind, the blessings of the Buddha's teachings are evoked, auspicious circumstance is created, and obstacles of all kinds are diverted.

The color of a prayer flag and the symbols printed on it create a prayer or offering that the wind distributes to the world each time it brushes against the flag. The Tibetan word for a horizontal prayer flag is Lung ta, which translates literally as "wind horse." The prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade and the flags disintegrate from wind and sun. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside of the old.

Traditional Tibetan Prayer Flags

These cotton flags are hand made in Nepal by Tibetans and include both English and Tibetan translations in each flag. In addition, one extra flag is included so you may write your personal prayers, so each set becomes more dear to you and your loved ones, with your own wishes, messages and prayers. We offer the flags in sets of 10 (2 of each color), plus #11 - your blank flag to personalize.

LUNGTA BRIEF VERSION (WIND HORSE)

This is the most commonly used prayer flag among Tibetans. All occasion are good for flying this flag. Wonderful addition to a housewarming gift to me remembered.

GYALTSEN TSEMO (VICTORY BANNER)

This is one of the most common flags that one can see Tibetans hanging and specially at New Years celebrations, new venture and beginnings, almost like a every day use flag for auspiciousness. Gyaltsen Tsemo prayer flags consists of sutras bestowed by Lord Buddha to Indra, king of the gods to overcome his enemies and achieve victory.

CHENREZIG (AVALOKESWARA)

This flags contains the image of Chenrezig, Avalokeswara (Bodhisattva of Compassion) along with the heart mantra. Referred to as the popular Om Mani Padme Hum prayer flag as it contains this mantra. H.H the 14th Dalai Lama is the present reincarnation of the Chenrezig. Raising of this flag helps one accumulate merit, relieve negative Karma and rescuing all from the sea of suffering.

OM MANI PADME HUM

This is a mini version of the all-powerful mantra, it is the most common mantra in Tibet, recited by Buddhists, painted or carved on rocks, and prayer wheels. It is easy and it contains the whole essence of the entire teaching. Tibetans, almost all Buddhist believe that it is very good to practice the mantra of Chenrezig. Each of the 6 syllables is on different color cloths with the green having 2 together, and is repeated twice, for a set of 10. Each flag is 3”X3” square, it is about 32” long with 6” string on both ends for tying. This helps one relieve negative karma, accumulates merit, helps rescue from the sea of suffering and achieve Buddha hood.
