1.6.c. Psychomotor Domain

PERCEPTUAL MOTOR OR PSYCHOMOTOR is the domain used whenever we wish to build skills within the learner. These skills may involve where to place one’s hands during a Therapeutic Touch procedure or how to sit during meditation. Anything that involves coordination of mind and body falls into this category of learning.

We begin with PERCEPTIONS , the process of becoming aware of objects, qualities, or relations by way of the sense organs. Perception includes

  1. SENSORY STIMULATION – auditory, visual, tactile, taste, smell, and kinesthetic;
  2. CUE SELECTION – deciding to what cues one must respond in order to satisfy the particular requirements of the task or performance;
  3. TRANSLATION – relating of perception to action in performing a motor act.

Following perception, comes SET or preparatory adjustment or readiness for a particular kind of action or experience. Set includes:

  1. MENTAL SET – the readiness, in the mental sense, to perform a certain motor act;
  2. PHYSICAL SET – readiness in the sense of having made the anatomical adjustments necessary for a motor act to be be performed;

    EMOTIONAL SET – readiness in terms of attitudes favorable to the motor acts taking place. Willingness and lack of fear

After set is GUIDED RESPONSE – the overt behavioral act of an individual under the guidance of the instructor or in response to self-evaluation where the student has a model or criteria.. This includes:

  1. IMITATION – the execution of an act as a direct response to the perception of another person performing the act and
  2. TRIAL AND ERROR.

MECHANISM occurs when the learned response becomes habitual

COMPLEX OVERT RESPONSE accompanies complex movement patterns considered skilled when performance is automatic and there is no uncertainty in performance.

ADAPTATION is the ability to alter motor activities to meet the demands of new situations

and ORIGINATION is the creation of new motor acts or ways of manipulating materials out of understandings, abilities, and skills developed in the psychomotor area.

PSYCHOMOTOR DOMAIN IN DETAIL

1.0 PERCEPTION

The process of becoming aware of objects, qualities, or relations by way to the sense organs.

1.1 SENSORY STIMULATION

Impingement of a stimulus upon one or more of the sense organs:

  • 1.11 Auditory
  • 1.12 Visual
  • 1.13 Tactile
  • 1.14 Taste
  • 1.15 Smell
  • 1.16 Kinesthetic

1.2 CUE SELECTION

Deciding to what cues one must respond in order to satisfy the particular requirements of task performance.

1.3 TRANSLATION

3.0 GUIDED RESPONSE

5.1 RESOLUTION OF UNCERTAINTY

The act is performed without hesitation of the individual to get a mental picture of the task sequence.

5.2 AUTOMATIC PERFORMANCE

The individual can perform a finely coordinated motor skill with a great deal of ease and muscle control.

6.0 ADAPTATION

Altering motor activities to meet the demands of new problematic situations requiring a physical response

7.0 ORIGINATION

Creating new motor acts or ways of manipulating materials out of understandings, abilities, and skills developed in psychomotor area.
