2.6 ES (Extravert – Sensing) Personal Type Descriptions — Implications for Teaching

ESTP – Extravert, Sensing, Thinking, Feeling

PERSONAL TYPE
Matter-of fact, do not worry or hurry, enjoy whatever comes along. Tend to like mechanical things and sports, with friends on the side. May be a bit blunt or insensitive. Adaptable, tolerant, generally conservative in values. Dislike long explanations. Are best with real things that can be worked, handled, taken apart, or put together.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING:
May need to curb their assertiveness and take their learner’s feelings into consideration. They need to look beyond a quick fix by planning ahead and developing stick-to-itiveness for teaching to be satisfactory.

ESTJ – Extravert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging

PERSONAL TYPE
Practical, realistic, matter-of-fact, with a natural head for business or mechanics. Not interested in subjects they see no use for, but can apply themselves when necessary. Like to organize and run activities. May make good administrators, especially if they remember to consider others’ feelings and points of view.

May need to consider all perspectives before designing the workshop, including the human element. In addition, this teaching type may need to be prodded to look at the benefits of change and to take time for reflection. They need to be reminded to show appreciation for their learners’ work for teaching to be successful.

ESFP – Extravert, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving

PERSONAL TYPE
Outgoing, easygoing, accepting, friendly, enjoy everything and make things more fun for others by their enjoyment. Like sports and making things. Know what’s going on and join in eagerly. Find remembering facts easier than mastering theories. Are best in situations that need sound common sense and practical ability with people as well as with things.

May need to develop a way to analyze information rather than just accepting it. They may need to learn how to give negative feedback to their learners; yet keep the learners motivated.

ESFJ – Extravert, Sensing, Feeling, Judging

PERSONAL TYPE
Warm-hearted, talkative, popular, conscientious, born cooperators, active committee members. Need harmony and may be good at creating it. Always doing something nice for someone. Works best with encouragement and praise. Little interest in abstract thinking or technical subjects. Main interest is in things that directly and visibly affect people’s lives.

May need to learn how to value and manage conflict. They need to "listen hard" to what their learners need and want for teaching to be successful. They need to consider the logical, global implications of their instructional decisions.
